1) Stay safe. Consider getting a separate credit card just for online purchases, and always make sure that you are doing business with reputable companies online. Make sure that any private information you send will not be shared with third parties (check the fine print to make sure), and make sure that any retail site you use is encrypted to keep your credit card numbers safe.

2) Know what to buy online. Certain items just travel better than others, so you might want to think twice before ordering something very large pr fragile — it’ll cost you a lot to ship or may arrive broken. Items such as perfumes, clothing, books, DVDs, and thousands of other items are all perfect online purchases, though.

3) Compare prices. Often, you can buy the same item for a lot less just by comparison shopping. And comparison shopping online couldn’t be easier. Simply open up a few tabs in your Internet browser window, and look for the same item in several different stores. You will notice a large price difference. Be sure to compare delivery costs and additional fees, however. You don’t want to be surprised by a large additional handling fee on an item that you thought was inexpensive.

4) Always check warranties and return policies. Whether you’re buying a piece of clothing or a high-end item, you want to make sure that you can return it if anything goes wrong with your order.

5) Buy luxury items. One of the joys of online shopping is that you can buy items that you can’t easily find in stores. Why buy the same old products you could buy your local store, when you can buy luxury goods and interesting products from around the world? As an added bonus, you will often find that buying online saves you money, which can really add up on big-ticket items.

6) Keep good records. When you make a purchase online, print off your receipt, proof of payment, URL where you bought the item, any confirmation numbers, and the expected date your item is set to arrive. If your item does not arrive as promised, you want to have proof of your order.
